Worst part of machining an RGG?
« on: June 11, 2020, 06:02:29 PM »
Just out of curiosity. It’s generally said that the box cam is the worst part of the journey to building an RGG and I was wondering if that is really the general consensus among builders or have others found other parts more difficult? For me personally the box cam wasn’t that big of a deal. I found the cocking switch and the extractors more tedious and annoying. What’s your take?

For me,  the easiest approach to the cocking switch is this.

Using 1/2 diameter material turn the .250 shank to length

then mill the flat back to the shank then put the pick up slots in

and cut the angle on top. No angle on this image

Looks like a spring detent system as well. I don’t have my plans out. Is that how they call for it to be done?

The bolts were a nightmare with the silver soldering being the main focus. Then one sunny day an angel (cutter) had some one piece bolts for sale and all was better after that. :-P

I just made a crappy little fixture with three holes in it and used it with dowel pins to quickly and perfectly align the 60° firing pin hole angle and then silver soldered both pieces together. Once soldered I added a 6-32 set screw to lock at all in place. It worked out well.

Print #1 wasn’t drafted correctly. Note the radical difference between the tails on the back between the top and side view. I machined mine to resemble the longer tail version because the additional clearance in that area made more sense to me and it works well in my gun.

Yeah I really like your improved design. One of the things that I botched and had to work my way around a little was broaching the plate just a little crooked and what you are doing completely eliminates that from happening among other things.
