Hello all. I am gathering components for my build. It looks as though Cutter has the bugs worked out of his designs. If anyone has a set of his bolts for sale let me know.
Alternatively, if there are any drawings available for his designs I would be interested in those as well. I thought I remembered seeing some cad drawings on the extractors and possibly redesigned firing pins/locations? I cannot find them now.
I did find a post where he said he was sold out and done producing them. So, if anyone has some bolts they don’t need let me know thanks. Chris.
-
As usual. I found the post I was looking for after posting this. I’m still in the market for a set of bolts if anyone has some.
If not I’m printing the specs Cutter was nice enough to share on how to do the ruger extractors.

If you decide to make your own.
I have a sample bolt assembly, just got it back.
I could loan it to you, but I do want it back.
It’s been around the country several times, but
still in good condition.
PM me if interested
Cutter/Jerry

Thanks Jerry. I will take you up on that.
I was looking over the write up on how you machined for the extractors and I had one question. The second operation you have the bolt at 5deg. Is this to create a hinge point for the extractor to rock on when it is pushing over the cartridge lip?
-

Yes Sir,
When you receive it, feel free to take it apart.
The extractor is removed similar to Ruger, a few videos on YouTube
demonstrating that.

Hello Jerry, Could I get on that list for your Bolt.. Trying to find the cad drawings? Thanks

I’ll let you know when it’s available
Did bolts come with your GG ?

I am also looking at getting a set of Cutters Bolts. I would like more detail on the ruger style extractor.

I\'m also interested in a set of one piece bolts if anyone with cnc is producing any. I have no access to cnc equipment.
-
I have dealings with a few machineshops who could produce them if Jerry gives his blessing to do so.

Bless all the Gatling gun builders out there.
If I can help, I will.
Good luck
-
I will try to get a quote on several sets.
-
Thanks for checking on this. I\'m in if it works out.
-
I’ll post when I get it all quoted. I got busy with Christmas for the kids
-
Maybe this will help someone making RG-G bolts.
NC program
-
Thanks. I will open it tonight when I get home.
-
Any updates on the bolts? If you deal with a shop, I\'m also looking for a gun friendly CNC shop for another project that I have, not gatling gun related. Thanks
-
I just got a reply, the were asking for an STP file for the bolts. I did not get ahold of the guy yet. Anyone familiar with stp? I have not heard of that extension before.

It’s a STEP file from SolidWorks

Is that a solid model?

Yes Sir

Thanks Jerry. I run a couple CNC machines but am limited in my knowledge of programming to what I learned for building cues and basic programming for them.

For what it’s worth,
Here’s my sketch of the bolt blank for the lathe.
I double ended the blanks as shown using 3/4 stock material.
-
I will see what kind of price the give me (ballpark) and see it it’s worth having some made.
-
I saw the extractor cuts were not on the modeling. I will have them add those also. I have the measurements written down at home. I will verify them with you before if you don’t mind.
-
This is what I have
-

Do whatever you want.
I sold the bolts without any extractors.
There are many extractor ideas in the GG world.
-
I forgot to post. I heard back but haven’t received the quote yet. I need to get them all the specs. I could of sworn I sent them with the rendering but I guess not. I will try to send them this week. It’s crazy busy getting ready for a cue show next month.
I plan on starting my build after that show so I will have a lot more time to devote to this project then. I will post when I get the price.
-
For what it’s worth, on my first batch of bolts with caps.
10 bucks each was a quote for the CNC lathe work for a
quantity of 150 , material included.
From a young man with the machine in his garage , a
few years ago.

We sure never seen that many completed guns here on the forum. Makes one think there are a lot of those bolt sets collecting dust out there.

Many unfinished Gatling guns.

About 80 bolts so far.
-
This is what we have so far.
bluedog = 20
gbull = 35
maccrazy2 = 30
Cutter = 25
I’m thinking run 10% over for setup and loss
making it 121. Maybe we can make it with 3 - 12\' bars getting 117
Any more wanted or someone want to change their quantity ?
-
Quantity looks good. Are we looking at just the turning?
-
I will take a few extra
-
Quantity looks good. Are we looking at just the turning?
That depends on what each individual this four member group wants
to contribute to the project.
We need material, lathe work, mill work for the bolt body. Plus caps.
If we want finished bolts, then , hammer shafts & springs, firing pins,
extractors with springs, and a little more mill work.
I could do the mill work on my CNC, but I’m open for suggestions.
Lets see what we come up with
-
I would take 11 of them if they are complete with the extractors, firing pins etc.
bruski
-
Maybe I missed it but what’s the cost per bolt?
Mike
-
I have a manual mill and lathe. Willing to do whatever and can fund materials as needed
-
I would vote for complete bolts but am open to whatever
-
Maybe I missed it but what’s the cost per bolt?
Mike
No Mike, you didn’t miss it.
No cost has been posted.
The material for the one piece bolt blank, caps, springs, firing pins, and screws,
maybe 10 bucks each max.
Hopefully we can all share the time , somewhat equally
-
Well then add 10 more for me please.
Mike
-
I see a logistics problem developing here.
Maybe everyone involved should buy their own 3/4†diameter 303 stainless,
and do the preliminary lathe work.
Here’s a sketch for the lathe operation
Comments ????
I will do the CNC operation for 50% of the quantity you want.
Want 10, send 15
The CNC operation consist of the radius & flats, cutting the follower,
holes and slots for extractor and firing pin

I have a rfq out for the turning. I was gonna use the drawings that were further up on this page. The lathe sketch you just posted is a lot simpler. I take it you will mill the .500 Dia. when you cut the follower. That should make the price better. The logistics of a group endeavor is a little complicated. If the quote seems reasonable I think I would order what we need at that time. I would be willing to sell at cost plus shipping, or trade for the mill work. Cutter, I know you have the milling op tooled and programmed it would be a good fit for me to work out a trade if you want for that. The quote would include material.

Great,
Let’s wait for the quote and go from there.
and yes on the .500 dia
-
I’m good either way
-
Cutter, there is a third turned piece that strikes the firing pin. I seem to recall you eliminated the funky flathead screw. Do you have a sketch of it? I might as well get a quote on that too while I’m at it.

The hammer shaft was made from O1 tool steel , and hardened
6-32 thread X 1/2\" deep

I need a new Carrier block to check
all the new bolts coming up.
Might as well build another gun.

Are you boring full depth or flipping it over and going from both sides?

Boring full depth, 1.75 through with a
3/8 boring bar

I have figured out the hole pattern features on the DRO I put on the Bridgeport. The directions were a little lacking but YouTube got me going. I also got a rotary table in preparation for this build. Unfortunately time is a little limited but I’m getting going as time allows.

In my opinion the rotary table is
easier and safer for the bolt circle

Cutter, would you want 50% of just the bodies? Or caps and strikers also in exchange for the mill work? Should have numbers tomorrow for all three turned pieces and heat treat.

Your right Chris,
It’s a 3/8 two flute, with relieved shank.
-
Was it for rigidly or just what you had on hand that worked well?
I’m chomping at the bit to make some chips. Waiting on the 3in brass and reamers to arrive. I hope to get the the rotating assembly mostly built before I will have to shelf it for a while and get back to my usual work
-
Got back first quote for turning
Body 11.05/125qty
10.08/200qty
Cap. 5.92/125qty
5.46/200qty
Hammer shaft 8.26/125qty Not including heat treat. Hoping to get them all in one lot for 150 min. lot charge.
6.89/200qty
The first two seem ok, the hammer shaft seems high. He is gonna look at it and see why. I have sent out to two more places. At the 200 part quantities it comes to 22.43 per ass. If you decide to have Cutter do the mill work the final cost would work out to be 33.65. Seems like a fair trade at this point, I remember he was getting 30 before, and I think that was without the firing pin hole and the ejector slot and holes. Does that sound right, Cutter? I should have more info soon.

I agree,the body & caps look good.
If you go for 200 body & caps, I’ll buy what’s left over.
I sold bolt bodies & caps with firing pin hole for 30 bucks
-
The final quote came in at $21.50. That’s for a bolt body, cap, and heat treated hammer shaft. Including myself there seem to be five of us on the list. The total I came up with was 120. I am ordering 200 sets. It looks like five weeks lead time plus another week for heat treating the hammer shafts. Cutters offer on the mill work makes the price work out to $32.25 for a complete bolt, minus the firing pin, spring, and ejector pieces. I will post when they get here. Sorry it took so long, but I think it was worth it.
-
I’ll take the 3 sets and 3-5 extra bolts for spares
-
Thanks for doing the leg work. I’m still trying to get a quote for barrels.
-
The bolt pieces are back from the lathe shop. I have 200 assemblies. I am keeping 48, leaving 152 for sale. 48 will give me 32 after giving Cutter 16 for the mill work. As far as the ejectors, firing pins and firing pin springs I think we can each get our own. I seem to recall Cutter had a part # from a spring house for the firing pin spring. The ejectors and springs are available from many suppliers. The firing pins I believe are just .060 piercing punches from McMaster Carr. The firing pin springs might be cheaper in bulk. Any thoughts Cutter?
-
I will take 33 bolt assemblies for myself and 17 for Jerry for a grand total of 50 assemblies. Thanks for getting this rolling for us and, thanks to Jerry for the machining.
-
Would these bolts be a direct replacement for the RGG designed bolts? We built our RGG per plans using bolts from Cutter. Made one major mistake. We milled the barrel away for the ejector clearance and that lets the shell casing blow out and jams the gun. I need to cut off the barrels and redo them making the gun a little shorter. I would like to have the Ruger style ejector so if these are a direct replacement I would take 11. I have had some medical issues the past two years but am hoping I can now get back in the shop.
Thanks Dennis

I have a .DXF sketch for the extractor.

I think I remember a sketch of the ejector a while back. I must have assumed it was the actual Ruger piece. Glad I didn’t stock up ahead of time.

Here’s some spring information, big savings
I couldn’t find any savings on firing pin, maybe buy our own.

Could you post the dxf for the ejector. I have a friend with a wire edm. He might be willing to cut some. Did you heat treat them? How about the plunger?
-
Chris,
The Ruger extractor will not fit in the RG-G bolt.
I designed one similar to fit, using the same mechanics.
-
Oh, I did not realize it was a custom part. Glad I waited to order some.

After discussion with Cutter I would like 18 bolts if available. That will be 12 for me and 6 for Cutter. Thanks much.
-
I need 15 then.
Mike

As of this morning the total number of bolt assemblies spoken for is at 181. This breaks down to,
Blue dog 30
Maccrazy 45
Cutter 25
4171 15
Drhardin 18
Me 48
It appears that everyone is opting to have cutter do the mill work. If there is anyone else, or any changes we have about a week to decide. The hammer shafts will be back from heat treat by then. I guess the plan would be to send cutter all the parts. He can mill them and then send them on to us individually. Payment should be made to me before I ship. I need to check on shipping charges also. If I have missed anything let me know. I am also looking into getting the ejectors and the two springs we will need. The prices for the springs make sense to buy them in bulk.
Gary

I’ll take 50 total.

I think bruski wanted a set.
I’ll buy the springs and ship them with the bolts.

Really super of you guys doing this for everyone. THANKS!!!!

Anyone else want bolts ?
I’ll give this a couple days before I will buy the extras

I have contacted everyone, and have received reply’s from everyone except Bluedog. If you see this is messaged you the details for payment and delivery. Let me know if you still want the 2 sets we talked about.

We are working on a plan. Are you looking for complete assemblies or just the turned blanks?
-
If there is an option to purchase 11 completed bolts with everything installed and ready to use, count me in. I just can\'t find the time to assemble let alone machine anything any more. Between my business and having to go and pee every 45 minutes from an enlarged prostate, I am drained.

I am working on that option. I already have 200 extractors in hand. Waiting for a quote to finish machine the bodies complete.

gbull,
I had bought some one piece bolts complete less the extractor machining, but also got the \"ruger style\" extractors a few years ago from Jerry for two guns. Between me and a friend, we got three gatlings starts and would need a third set of bolts. If they are complete with extractors, great. If not, the one piece machine with the firing pin hole is a big time savings. Anybody making box cams? I keep checking the forum.
-
I have material to make a couple box cams. Jerry was kind enough to complete one for me. I plan on eventually completing the others as I am trying to build the main components for 3 guns.
It won’t be right away but I can post when I am getting set up to do them if anybody needs one done. I have a CNC to cut them on but I will have to change out the spindle to cut these as it’s set up for very tiny precise work.
-
I would be in for a couple of box cams when you get set up.
-
Hi,
I wonder if there is some brave soul out there would be willing to loan me a completed Cutter bolt? The conditions of the loan are negotiable including making a cash deposit with the trusting soul that has such a bolt.
The purpose is to determine if its feasible for my son to reproduce the bolts in a small quantity. Right now, this is nothing more than just a talking project with my son (in the fabrication biz 5 axis, lasers, water jets, etc.) and it would be useful to have the real McCoy. More detailed photographs would be helpful too. The quantity I want right now is 22 but if this become a for real project it\'s not much trouble to make more so this might become a opportunity to help some more folks.

I know this is an old topic but I am interested in purchasing a bolt. New, broken or wore out.
-
Are you looking for a replacement bolt or one to use for a set-up piece?
-
I am looking for a setup bolt. I think having one in my hand will help model it for cnc.

The sample bolt I got from Cutter is loaned out right now. I will see if I can get it back. I will make a call today and get back to you.

Thank you, I appreciate the help.

Larryx, has the sample bolt. He asked that you pm him your contact info. He will send it along to you on Monday. Good luck, Gary.

Thanks gbull, I sent him my info the other day.
