Title: Rat Gat
Post by: on March 31, 2012, 11:49:19 AM

I would like to do a parallel build with one or more members, more is better.

Not the traditional RG-G design. More of a Rat Gat.

Based on the Ruger 10 22, with 5 stock barrels and bolts.

I picked up 5 barrels at a gun show for 10 bucks each and a bolt for 20.

There\'s a lot of parts out there.

Who\'s in ??

Cutter,
I am interested but just too involved with the firing problem of the D&E.  I would like the opportunity to work with you.  I will, however, follow the posts with much interest.

Steve,
I\'m looking at this as a secondary build.
Maybe taking around 2 years.
If you have comments or suggestions jump in, I want different ideas.
Good luck with the problem.

And Thanks

The aluminum prototype bolt for the Rat Gat is almost finished.

The bolts will be 303 stainless.

Most of you will recognize the hardware.

The rear of the bolt similar to RG-G design.

But a lot more room to work with.

Here is a picture of the printed plastic plate. The layers need sanding to use as a pattern for sand casting. The barrel holes need reaming after cast into aluminum and everything else cleaned up with a fine sand paper.

Hey bruski, that 3D printer is amazing.

After 8 hours of machining.

I spent an hour and a half cleaning up chips.

The Rat is already heavier than one Six Shooter.

The plate took a little over 8 hours to print with no fill inside or it would have taken over 19 hours with 50% fill. I am glad that there is no labor charges involved when it is turned on. I am learning that the only way to sand this PLA type of plastic is to use water and fine sand paper or it either melts, loads up the paper or is still rough in the end.

The plate you made turned out very nice and looks great with the barrels in it.

Your Rat gun looks almost like about a .357 magnum size compared to the .22 next to it. That might be the way to go if we can\'t find any more .22 lr ammo. At least the center fires can be reloaded again.

Title: Rat Gat
Post by: on June 21, 2013, 06:20:11 PM
The printer made the model slightly larger in all directions so cleanup will need to be done after casting.
 cutter,
If you want to start a .357 with about six barrels, I would be right behind you also. The only problem that would need to be delt with is the recoil on the bolts would need to be absorbed 100% by something other than the cam follower pins or bearings.

Cutter, can\'t wait to see what you come up with. I\'ve been thinking about the accles for a while. It positively feeds like your drum mag, with a higher capacity. With a cnc, the spiral cuts should be easy. Delrin for the two spiral plates, and the spoked carrier? Victorianshipmodels.com has a nice illustrated cutaway video on one. Thanks for posting your ideas, and the progress. It\'s been a real inspiration to a lot of us I\'m sure.

Sparky,
You are correct, that was March 2012.

I\'ll be using the RG-G method
Still using stock extractors, firing pins, and related hardware.
Also 6 barrels instead of 5.

The real change is in the movement.
The cams angle changes about 8° from 25° to 17° or
about 30% difference. Creating less friction getting to
the firing point, and smoother transition to the
recoil point.

I\'ll video that.

Not the best test results, went like this.
300 rounds or 4 full magazines.
29 rounds did not chamber correctly, either fell out or jammed and bent.
But no misfires on the 271 that chambered.
Back to the drawing board.

Cutter,

Do the rounds get out of place from the recoiling? If so the only solution that seems to correct that on my .357 gat was to change the box cam to a steeper and faster closing speed. I tried adding a cartidge holder but wouldn\'t you know it the rims hung up on it some of the time. It has quite a bit more recoil than the 22 does though.

Bruski,
The .22 is so light it doesn\'t take much to move it.
A little deeper in the chamber , before the recoil occurs makes sense to me.
A new Cam needed.
Thanks again

Fresh off the drawing board.
First I created the cam in a wire frame, from predetermined points.
Next was constructing the surfaces from the wire frame.
Only the cam path surface is used for cutting on the CNC mill.
The diameters and length on the lathe.
This should chamber the round .220 deeper at time of firing/recoil.
Title: Rat Gat
Post by: Sparky_NY on January 25, 2015, 08:06:37 AM

Ok, I must be a idiot !   LOL      All this talk of putting the round deeper into the chamber, and then Cutters cam that puts the round almost a quarter inch deeper at firing,   what am I missing?    The rounds rim has to be tight to the breech face (barrell face) and the bolt reasonable tight to the round (less headspace).     How do you push a round a quarter inch deeper into the chamber??????       Tear the rim off?  LOL

What the heck am I missing?

Title: Rat Gat
Post by: Cutter on January 25, 2015, 11:32:35 AM
Sorry George, my bad

The problem barrel is at 60° from TDC, at the time of recoil the cartridge is only .150 into the chamber.

At recoil the cartridge would sometimes get cocked in the pan, causing the problem.

I changed only the delivery side of the cam.

The path starts at 18° , at 60° the cam changed by .220 , then back to 150°

I need those 3 points to create the spline.

Title: Rat Gat
Post by: Sparky_NY on January 25, 2015, 06:38:55 PM

Ahhh now I understand !      I was thinking of the barrel that was ready to fire.      Couldn\'t figure out why you would try to push a round .220 further into the chamber than its seated position !     LOL

Hi gbull,
I have the extractor rotated as far to the right as possible applying
uneven spring pressure on the casing causing it to flip out as soon
as it clears the chamber. My first attempt about three years ago
was with the extractor on top, but the even pressure would hold it in place,
sometimes release it, never knew where it would go.

Notice the slot in the original pan for a kicker, pan
is in 4 parts now. Works good, I\'m not changing that.

I have not worked on the mill in quite a while,  I got  the electronics done and the Z under motion, the X and Y remain.   I got sidetracked !     I built a 32x50 pole barn for a workshop, 10ft ceiling.   It was a lot of work and the end is in sight now, pretty much down to some wiring and pouring the floor.   Gonna be a hell of a shop, something I have always wanted but never had the room.     Meanwile, I picked up a jet 14x40 lathe a few months back, a big improvement from the 9x20 I had.

Back to the bolts. Are there threads in the top of the .400 hole?  And is that a smaller hole at the bottom of the .400 hole? What size spring do you use on the hammer shaft?
Title: Rat Gat
Post by: Cutter on November 13, 2015, 03:31:54 PM
Joboxxer,

The threads on top are 3/8-24 , the flat bottom hole 5/16

Lee Spring Co.  # LC 040D 15 M

(.04 dia. 1-1/2 long music wire)

I have a sample bolt that\'s been around the country

twice, it should be back next week if that would help

To put things into perspective, how long did it take to draw that part up and how much machining time to cut it?

Title: Rat Gat
Post by: Sparky_NY on November 23, 2015, 06:01:07 AM

6000 hours of educational time leaning to drive the cadcam and the cnc machine,  10 minutes to draw, 10 minutes to machine   LOL

Its the old story of how people with a LOT of experience make things look easy.

Thanks Sparky, but at 75 I\'ve slowed down considerably.
If supplied a 2D print it would take under one hour, but this
is all about what I want so I keep making changes.
I think one day for the machining process.
I\'m in the 55th year of my apprenticeship, that’s 110,000 hrs.
OK, enough of my bull shit.

I use no bolt extractor.

I unscrew the cascabel & cocking switch knobs,

and remove the breech plate. Access through

the recoil plate, finger push. The aluminum plug

you see just keeps the bolt on track.

Spent casings like the X marks the spot, and jams.

I have another new cartridge carrier like the one in Shorty

Two new magazines for the Twins, the small one belongs to Shorty

You can\'t just post a pic like that with no details !  Inquiring minds want to know......        What are material are those mags made from?     The black color has me wondering if its a plastic or metal painted / anodized or something.       They look great, and function even better which is what really counts.

Title: Rat Gat
Post by: Cutter on February 05, 2017, 12:21:43 PM
If we have no inquiring minds, we have no forum.

The material is black Delrin, I use it because it’s black,
slippery, easy to cut.

I will make some drawings of the newest gun version, but very limited.
Beginning with the Bolt, In my opinion the most important assembly.
The heart of a gun, it does all the work.

Always open to inquiring minds
