I have a machine in my shop I bought years ago that I am finally getting around to getting it up and running. Itâ€™s a wood doweling machine. There are 2 motors both 3 phase. After some poking around I was able to determine the second motor had 2 poles reversed, wired to the wrong side of the magnetic connector and therefore the E stop would not shut it down. Also, located a fried terminal on a drum switch that took out was appears to be a newer baldor motor.

The motor ran but after 1 minute the case got hot in one spot and I could smell burning. After removing the motor and tear down the burnt windings were apparent. A quick trip to the motor shop ended as I expected. Cheaper to replace than rebuild. I know enough to be dangerous so Iâ€™m going to attempt the rewind myself. Last night I was able to map all the windings and removed one winding intact to use as a pattern for rewinding the new wire.

Located and ordered the magnet wire and insulation paper. Still looking for the correct cordage to bind the stator windings with. Also will order the varnish for the windings as well.

Lol. Actually it refers to Mac machine guns.

Buying a new motor would definitely be easier $700 it just seems like a waste as this one probably has less than 3 hours of actual use. I bought the machine as complete but with â€œissuesâ€

Stator winding mandrels roughed out. I will clean up and radius the corners tonight.

And back in the machine and it is working great. It feeds a square piece of wood in the left and spits out a dowel on the right. An 18inch piece in under 10 seconds.

Left to right my initial test cuts. Got the blades set up and cutting well. I just sent them off to get them reground properly. Now I just need to get it all cleaned up and it will be ready to go.

So total cost minus labor of course. About $95, a new motor was about $750 after shipping. I found a couple cheaper but they were not in stock.

That is pretty cool, I just fixed a motor for myself. I put new bearings in, a sleeve in one bell and cleaned it up. saved 500 bucks! I had no idea you could rewind one!
